ABSTRACT
One of the most significant forms of government in the contemporary world has long been
considered to be democracy. It is founded on the core idea that the people own political
power and that everyone has the right to take part in decision-making through representation,
elections, and public discourse. Democratic governance has spread throughout the world over
the past century and is now strongly linked to ideals like equality, political freedom,
accountability, and the rule of law. However, a number of intricate issues facing democracy in
the twenty-first century have sparked worries about its stability and future growth.
Many democratic cultures have seen a rise in political polarization, a fall in public confidence
in political institutions, and an increase in citizen discontent in recent years. Public trust in
democratic governance has also declined as a result of economic disparity, corruption, and the
influence of influential political figures. Simultaneously, the quick development of social
media and digital communication has drastically altered how political information is
disseminated and discussed. Digital platforms have opened up new avenues for civic
involvement and political participation, but they have also facilitated the propagation of false
information, political manipulation, and ideological divides.
This dissertation's goal is to investigate whether democracy is going through a major crisis or
is changing in the twenty-first century. By examining political changes, academic viewpoints,
and worldwide trends, the study investigates how democratic governance is evolving. This
study employs a hybrid research technique, examining political facts and modern democratic
processes in addition to qualitative analysis of academic literature. By using this method, the
study aims to comprehend how political systems and democratic institutions are reacting to
the difficulties posed by globalization, technological advancement, and changing public
expectations.
The study's conclusions imply that while democracy is under a lot of strain, this does not
always mean that democratic governance is failing or collapsing. Rather, it seems that
democracy is changing and evolving in response to new technological, social, and economic
circumstances. Digital activism, online political debates, and citizen-led movements are
examples of new forms of political engagement that have become significant components of
modern democratic practice. Additionally, a lot of democratic institutions are working to
promote accountability, openness, and public trust by reforming their structures and policies.
The study's overall conclusion is that democracy in the twenty-first century shouldn't be seen
exclusively through the prism of crises. Instead, it should be viewed as a system that is
always evolving and changing. Even if democracy faces substantial obstacles, there are still
chances for institutional innovation and reform. The ability of governments, political
organizations, and citizens to deal with these issues while upholding the fundamental
democratic principles of freedom, equality, and participation will be crucial to the future of
democracy
