ROLE OF AGNI (DIGESTIVE FIRE) AND MEDA DHATU (FAT TISSUE) IN ENDOCRINE DISORDERS
Agni, Meda Dhatu, Endocrine disorders, Obesity, Hypothyroidism, PCOS, Ayurveda, Metabolism
Ayurveda emphasizes the central role of Agni (digestive and metabolic fire) in maintaining homeostasis. Imbalance in Agni leads to impaired Dhatu poshana (tissue nourishment), particularly affecting Meda Dhatu (adipose tissue), which is closely linked to hormonal balance in modern endocrinology. Dysfunctional Agni may result in Ama (metabolic toxins), deranged lipid metabolism, and hormonal dysregulation, manifesting as disorders like diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism, PCOS, and metabolic syndrome. This review explores the Ayurvedic understanding of Agni and Meda Dhatu in the pathogenesis and management of endocrine disorders, correlating with modern metabolic and endocrine physiology.
