Abstract

Tea plantation workers play a significant role in the rural economy, particularly in plantation-dominated regions such as the Nilgiris district. Despite their contribution to the tea industry, many workers face financial challenges due to low wages, irregular employment, and rising living expenses. This study examines the income sources and spending patterns of tea plantation workers in Cherangode Panchayat. The research adopts a descriptive research design and collects primary data from plantation workers using a structured questionnaire. Statistical tools such as percentage analysis, Chi-square test, and correlation analysis are used to analyse the data. The results show that workers spend a major portion of their income on essential needs such as food, housing, healthcare, and education. The study also reveals that income level influences both spending behaviour and savings capacity. The findings emphasize the need for improving wage conditions, promoting financial literacy, and strengthening welfare support systems to enhance the economic stability of plantation workers.
