EVALUATION OF BITUMEN MODIFIED WITH COCONUT CHARCOAL POWDER AND RUBBER CRUMB: A COMPARITIVE STUDY

The performance and durability of bituminous pavements depend largely on the properties of the binder. Modification of bitumen using sustainable and waste- derived materials has gained attention as a means to enhance pavement performance and reduce environmental impact. This project aims to experimentally evaluate the effects of coconut charcoal powder (CCP) and rubber crumb as bitumen modifiers, used individually and in combination. Three types of modified binders will be prepared: coconut charcoal powder–modified bitumen rubber crumb–modified bitumen, and bitumen modified with a combination of coconut charcoal powder and rubber crumb. Standard laboratory tests, including penetration, softening point, ductility, and viscosity, will be carried out in accordance with relevant IS specifications to assess the physical and rheological properties of the modified binders. The study is intended to compare the influence of each modifier on bitumen characteristics and to examine the feasibility of using coconut charcoal powder and rubber crumb as sustainable additives in bituminous pavement construction.
