Abstract

Medicinal plants constitute an important source of therapeutic agents and have been used since ancient times in traditional healthcare systems. Plant-derived drugs provide prototypes for the development of safer and more effective pharmaceuticals. Among these medicinal plants, Moringa oleifera Lam., commonly known as the “Drumstick tree” or “Sahjan”, is widely recognized for its nutritional and pharmacological properties (Fahey, 2005; Anwar et al., 2007). The present review compiles pharmacognostic, physicochemical and biochemical characteristics of Moringa oleifera growing in the lower Shivalik hills of Himachal Pradesh. Standard pharmacognostic parameters such as total ash, acid-insoluble ash, water-soluble ash, moisture content and extractive values were evaluated using established protocols (Mukherjee, 2005; Kokate, 1996). Qualitative phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of important secondary metabolites including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, glycosides, saponins, steroids and terpenoids (Harborne, 2005; Evans, 2009). The findings indicate that Moringa oleifera leaves possess a high proportion of polar and semi-polar bioactive constituents responsible for diverse pharmacological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective and neuroprotective effects (Sreelatha & Padma, 2009). This review highlights the therapeutic potential of Moringa oleifera and emphasizes the need for further pharmacological and clinical investigations for the development of plant-based medicines.
