FORENSIC EXAMINATION OF SEIZED GOLD-LIKE BISCUITS USING DENSITY ANALYSIS AND ED-XRF SPECTROMETRY: A CASE STUDY

The present case study comprises of forensic and scientific evaluation of seized exhibits with an intent to evaluate their composition and authenticity. The initial evaluation was done by performing a visual and physical examination of exhibits. In the initial examination density and karat of each item was determined by using an ACZET density/karat analyzer in order to confirm compliance with scientific standards for gold. After which elemental analysis of exhibits was conducted using the Elvax Pro energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence method, which is a non-destructive method that provides an elemental profile of sample without damaging it. As a result of the analytical testing, elemental compositions and density values of samples provided strong evidence that the items contained base and alloy metals and were not genuine gold. This illustrates the significance of density testing and the use of Elvax Pro energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence to demonstrate evidence of precious metal and fraud in forensic examinations
