Comparative Analysis of the Contributions of Savitribai Phule & Begum Rokeya to Women's Education in India
Women's Education, Empowerment, Savitribai Phule, Begum Rokeya Sakhawat, Contribution, Liberation.
Women serve as a vital medium for the dissemination of education in India, transmitting values, knowledge, and ideals from one generation to the next. In the contemporary context, this assertion is widely acknowledged and rarely contested. Furthermore, any meaningful advancement of Indian education necessarily depends upon the active support, intellectual agency, and sustained contributions of women. The historic responsibility of leading women’s education in India from a state of marginalisation and darkness toward enlightenment and empowerment was courageously undertaken and significantly advanced by Savitribai Phule and Begum Rokeya Sakhawat. Though separated by region and historical context, both reformers conceptualised education as a means of liberation for women and viewed education as the central instrument of women's emancipation. This paper critically examines their contributions, comparing their ideological foundations, pedagogical initiatives, social resistance, and long-term impact. The analysis situates their work within the broader discourse of gender justice and educational reform in colonial India. For this study, the researchers depend on the secondary sources of data and use insightful discussion.
