Abstract

Abstract Three-phase induction motors are the workhorse of modern industry, yet they remain vulnerable to a variety of electrical and mechanical faults that can cause costly unplanned downtime. This paper presents a comprehensive microcontroller-based protection system for three-phase induction motors capable of detecting and responding to single phasing, over-voltage, under-voltage, and over-current conditions in real time. The PIC 16F877A microcontroller serves as the central processing unit, monitoring six analog inputs representing three-phase voltages and currents sampled via step-down transformers (220 V/6 V) and current transformers acting as current-to-voltage converters. Digital thresholding logic compares instantaneous measurements against pre-programmed nominal limits and issues trip signals to protective relays when violations are detected. An LCD interface provides continuous real-time display of fault parameters, and the system incorporates an auto-restart feature upon parameter recovery. Simulation and hardware test results confirm reliable fault detection, rapid trip response, and cost-effective implementation compared with conventional relay-only schemes.
