Abstract

Abstract Background: Cricket is a high-demand sport that subjects’ players to repetitive physical stress. Spin bowling, characterized by intense trunk rotation and shoulder torque, may lead to unique musculoskeletal (MSK) issues, especially as players age. Objective: To determine the prevalence and anatomical distribution of MSK discomfort among middle-aged spin bowlers and identify common areas of injury. Methodology: Design: Descriptive cross-sectional survey. Participants: Male cricket players, often categorised by age (e.g., 18–32 or older for middle-aged focus). Tools: Data typically collected using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) to assess regional pain over 7-day and 12-month periods. Results: General Prevalence: Studies indicate that 60% to 61% of bowlers experience cricket-related MSK problems. Primary Sites for Spin Bowlers: Shoulder (27%–39.1%): Identified as the most frequent site of injury for spin bowlers due to repetitive forceful overhead movements. Lower Back (25%–28%): Common due to trunk rotation, extension, and repetitive twisting during the delivery stride. Knees and Ankles: Frequently affected by high ground reaction forces and twisting during the run-up and follow-through. Type of Injury: Most discomfort is categorized as strains (42%) or sprains (26%), often resulting from overuse rather than acute trauma. Conclusion: Middle-aged spin bowlers face a high burden of MSK discomfort, primarily in the shoulder and lower back. These findings emphasize the need for structured conditioning, proper warm-up/cool-down routines, and targeted physiotherapy to prolong career longevity and prevent chronic injury.
