Bridging the Skill Gap through Secondary Education: A Study in the Context of Skill India Mission
Keywords: Skill Gap‚ Secondary Education‚ Skill India Mission‚ Vocational Education‚ Employability‚ Human Capital
ABSTRACT
Despite India's potential to reap the demographic dividend‚ India faces a huge skill gap‚ which is constraining growth and employment generation in the country. There is a mismatch between the skills we teach in the formal education system and the skills that the industry requires. This results in the paradox of high education and low employability. Keeping the Skill India Mission in mind‚ this paper attempts to highlight the role of secondary schools in skill gap bridging. It discusses the structural gaps in India's education system and policy measures such as vocationalization under secondary education. It summarizes how vocational education and skill development can help in skill gap bridging and improving employability. This paper adopts a conceptual and analytical approach using secondary data from government papers‚ policy papers‚ and contemporary studies. The paper argues that early introduction of vocational education‚ industry linkage‚ teacher training‚ and information communication technology (ICT) skill development may be the solution to the education-employment problem. The paper concludes with specific policy recommendations for how secondary education can support the development of skills and economic transformation.
