In the evolving Indian financial landscape, goal-oriented wealth creation has emerged as a critical priority for individuals seeking long-term financial security for objectives such as education, retirement, home ownership, and lifestyle enhancement. Mutual funds have gained prominence as a preferred investment avenue due to their flexibility, professional management, and accessibility across diverse investor segments. This study aims to examine investor awareness and perception of mutual funds as an effective instrument for achieving financial goals.
The findings indicate a notable improvement in investor awareness, driven by financial literacy initiatives, the proliferation of digital investment platforms, and regulatory interventions by SEBI and AMFI. However, a significant disparity persists between basic awareness and comprehensive understanding. While investors generally acknowledge the potential of mutual funds to generate superior long-term returns compared to traditional savings instruments, their perceptions are influenced by concerns related to market volatility, perceived risk, lack of transparency, and limited financial literacy.
Furthermore, the study highlights the critical role of socio-economic determinants—such as age, income, education, and prior investment experience—in shaping investment behavior and decisionmaking patterns. The results underscore that mutual fund, when aligned with individual financial goals, risk appetite, and investment horizon, can function as an effective vehicle for systematic wealth creation.
The study concludes that strengthening investor education, enhancing transparency, and promoting goal-based financial planning are essential to bridging the gap between awareness and participation, thereby fostering informed investment behavior and deeper penetration of mutual funds in India.
