Assam, one of the world’s most important tea – producing regions, faces increasing challenges as climate risk is high. A vital part of the sate’s economy, culture, and rural livelihoods, tea cultivation is extremely to extreme weather, temperature and rainfall fluctuations. Heavy rainfall events, monsoons, and rising temperatures have started to have an impact on tea yields, leaf quality, and overall productivity. According to yields are greatly reduced by temperature above 26.6 C and high precipitation variability, making climate change a serious threat to long – term sustainability.
At the same time, socio-economic pressures- including fragmented landholdings, limited access, fluctuating green leaf prices, and weak market linkages- intensify the vulnerability of small tea growers, who now produces Assam tea. While sustainable practices such as soil conservation, irrigation management, mixed cropping, and shade – grown tea offer resilience, widespread adoption remains limited. Environmental degradation, global supply chain and logistics constraints inequalities further complicates the sector’s sustainability. Nevertheless, opportunities exist; the government of Assam’s focus on tea tourism, improved farming practices can strengthen both economic and ecological stability. A system – based approach integrating climate adaptation, sustainable resources management, support for small growers, and improved market efficiency- is essential to safeguard Assam’s tea industry and ensure its long- term global relevance.
