Analyzing Seasonal Variability of Coastal Waves Through Time-Series Analysis

Changing waves at the coastline are highly significant in that they determine the behavior of the shoreline, the movement of the sand, the frequency of floods and the way in which ships are operated. In order to deal with the coastal lands correctly, we must fully comprehend how waves vary with change of seasons. The parameters of significant wave height (Hs) and maximum wave height (Hmax), peak period (Tp), zero-crossing period (Tz), wave direction and sea surface temperature (SST) are examined in this study as seasonal changes in major parameters of the waves. Our time-series dataset with high resolution is used and various tools like simple time-series plots, seasonal decomposition, correlation checks, heatmaps, and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) are employed to identify patterns. Findings indicate that wave heights, wave periods post-monsoon, wave directions (which are mostly steady with few variations during storms), and yearly temperature cycles in SST increase due to monsoons. The results of FFT also confirm the fact that waves are yearly and half-yearly. In general, this paper demonstrates the dynamics between local winds, swell waves, and monsoons to create wave behaviors at the coast. The coastal planning, climate studies, and enhancement of marine safety are some of the areas where this study would be applicable.
