Abstract

This research explores how globalization has shaped India’s seafood industry, looking at its economic growth, changing market trends, and social and environmental impacts. Seafood is an essential part of global food security, providing important nutrients and supporting the livelihoods of millions of people. With the rise of globalization, India has grown into one of the world’s leading seafood exporters, mainly due to the expansion of aquaculture and increasing global demand for products like frozen shrimp. This study looks at the key products India exports, its major international markets, and the growing shift toward value-added seafood in response to changing consumer preferences. At the same time, globalization has made the industry more vulnerable to global market changes. Factors such as international trade policies, price fluctuations, and tariff barriers—especially the US shrimp tariff introduced in 2025—have had a strong impact on demand. While India has adapted by expanding into new markets like Southeast Asia and the European Union, these shifts also highlight the risks of relying heavily on exports. The research also looks at how these changes affect small-scale and artisanal fishers, who often struggle with declining catches, increased competition, and difficulty meeting global quality standards. In addition, it addresses environmental challenges such as overfishing, habitat damage, and pollution from aquaculture, along with possible solutions like sustainable practices and government initiatives such as PMMSY. Overall, the study shows that while globalization has driven growth, the future of the industry depends on balancing economic progress with environmental sustainability and social fairness.
