Executive Summary
Fish is an excellent source of high-quality protein, lipids, vitamins, and minerals, supplying essential omega-3 fatty acids vital for cardiovascular health and brain development, particularly in developing nations where fish accounts for over 30% of animal protein intake. Despite its nutritional value, the seafood industry produces substantial waste, which can be nutrient-rich and might help address micronutrient deficiencies in vulnerable populations.
Seafood's role in nutrition is complicated by concerns regarding contaminants such as microplastics and agricultural runoff that bioaccumulate in fish. While observational studies suggest reduced disease risks with higher fish intake, clinical trials on fish oil supplements do not consistently indicate benefits for mortality. Fish production through aquaculture is efficient, supporting food security and combating malnutrition. Seafood consumption trends indicate growth, with rising fish availability and awareness contributing to increased intake.
However, nutrient variation and food safety issues, including bacterial pathogens and chemical contaminants, pose health risks. Addressing malnutrition through dietary diversity and education is essential. The fisheries sector in India is significant for food security and economic contribution, employing millions. Sustainable aquaculture practices are crucial for enhancing nutritional outcomes and livelihoods while mitigating environmental impacts. Comprehensive policies are needed to balance seafood promotion with public health safety and sustainable practices.
