Why Yamuna Clean-Up Needs More Than Just Drives
Yamuna River, Urban Pollution, Community Engagement, Environmental Governance, Sewage Management, Public Policy
This article examines the condition of the Yamuna River in Delhi through field-based engagement conducted under the Social Responsibility and Community Engagement (SR&CE) programme at Amity University. Based on participation in clean-up drives and on-ground observation, it highlights the gap between visible pollution and its actual sources. While community-led clean-up initiatives play an important role in raising awareness, the study finds that untreated sewage inflow remains the primary cause of river pollution. The article argues that without addressing structural issues such as wastewater management and policy implementation gaps, such efforts will have only temporary impact. It emphasizes the need for a shift from reactive clean-up to preventive and coordinated environmental
management.
