Rural Handicrafts and Indian Economy: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract:
India's informal economy depends heavily on rural handicrafts, which combine export revenue, job creation, and cultural preservation. In order to analyze the sector's size, economic contributions, demographic profile, governmental support, obstacles, and growth trajectory, this assessment synthesizes official data from the Ministry of Textiles, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), and Press Information Bureau (PIB). About 64.66 lakh artisans, 64% of them are women, work in this sector as of 2025. In FY 2024–2025, handicraft exports reached ₨ 33,122.79 crore. The article highlights the sector's contribution to rural resilience, women's empowerment, and congruence with national objectives like Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat through charts, graphs, pictures, and diagrams.
