Abstract

Skin infections are common health issues caused by different harmful microorganisms. These infections happen when the skin's protective barrier gets damaged, which allows bad bacteria to enter the body. As more pathogens become resistant to standard antibiotics, there is a growing need to find alternative natural antimicrobial agents. Medicinal plants have been used in traditional medicine because they contain active compounds that can help treat illnesses. One such plant is Piper betle, recognized for its ability to fight germs and its antioxidant properties. This study aimed to look at the chemical components and germ-fighting abilities of Piper betle leaf extract against common skin pathogens. Researchers collected clinical samples like wound swabs, pus, burn wound swabs, diabetic foot ulcer samples, and throat swabs using sterile methods. They grew these samples on specific media to isolate the bacterial pathogens and identified them through colony appearance, Gram staining, and biochemical tests. The screening for phytochemicals found alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins in the extract. The researchers tested the antimicrobial activity using the agar well diffusion method and found significant antibacterial effects, indicating that it could be a useful natural treatment option. These results encourage further research into developing plant-based antimicrobial products for safely managing skin infections.
